Understanding Vertebroplasty & Kyphoplasty in India
Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are minimally invasive procedures performed in India to treat painful vertebral compression fractures (VCFs), often caused by osteoporosis, trauma, or tumours. These procedures involve injecting medical-grade bone cement into the fractured vertebra to stabilise it, reduce pain, and restore spinal integrity. Kyphoplasty additionally uses a balloon to create a cavity and partially restore vertebral height before cement injection. Both aim to provide rapid pain relief and improve mobility, helping patients return to daily activities sooner.
Types / Variants of Vertebroplasty / Kyphoplasty
Vertebroplasty
Direct injection of bone cement into a fractured vertebra to stabilise it and relieve pain.
Kyphoplasty
A balloon is inflated within the fractured vertebra to create a cavity and restore height before cement injection.
Radiofrequency Kyphoplasty (RFK)
Uses radiofrequency energy to create a cavity within the vertebra, allowing for controlled cement delivery.
Sacroplasty
Similar cement augmentation technique applied to stabilise painful fractures in the sacrum (pelvic bone).

Technology & Techniques
In India, Vertebroplasty / Kyphoplasty may be performed using:
Benefícios
- Experience rapid and often dramatic pain relief, allowing for a quicker return to comfort and daily activities.
- Benefit from a minimally invasive approach, involving only small incisions and reduced recovery time compared to open surgery.
- Achieve improved mobility and functional independence, helping you resume a more active lifestyle.
- Enjoy a short hospital stay, with many patients discharged the same day or after just one night.
- Gain stabilisation of the fractured vertebra, effectively preventing further collapse and deformity.
- For kyphoplasty, there's potential for partial restoration of the lost vertebral height, improving spinal alignment.
Limitações
- These procedures are not suitable for all types of spinal fractures, particularly those with neurological compromise or instability.
- There is a small but present risk of bone cement leakage into surrounding tissues, potentially affecting nerves or blood vessels.
- As with any invasive procedure, there's a risk of infection, bleeding, or adverse reactions to anaesthesia.
- The procedures address the fracture but do not treat the underlying cause of osteoporosis, which requires separate management.
- While kyphoplasty can restore some height, complete restoration of original vertebral height is not always achievable.
- There is a possibility of new fractures developing at adjacent vertebral levels over time, especially if osteoporosis is untreated.

How the Procedure is Done (Step-by-Step)
Anaesthesia & Positioning
The patient receives local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia. They are then carefully positioned face down on the operating table for optimal access to the spine.
Needle Insertion
Under continuous X-ray (fluoroscopy) or CT guidance, a small incision is made. A hollow needle (trocar) is then precisely advanced into the fractured vertebral body.
Balloon Inflation (Kyphoplasty Only)
For kyphoplasty, a specialised balloon is inserted through the needle. It's inflated to create a cavity within the vertebra and partially restore its height, then deflated and removed.
Cement Injection
Medical-grade bone cement (polymethylmethacrylate, PMMA) is slowly injected into the fractured vertebra. This fills the cavity and stabilises the bone, preventing further collapse.
Closure & Recovery
Once the cement hardens, the needle is removed, and the small incision is covered with a sterile dressing. The patient is then moved to a recovery area for observation.
